Ok, figured out the problem. Don't laugh now, but I checked the Advanced settings of that host, and the first setting
- Annotations.WelcomeMessage was set to "syslog" for some reason. I know for a fact I haven't touched that setting, so it's weird how that happened. I tried to change it, and I get the Call "OptionManager.UpdateValues" for object "EsxHostAdvSettings-93". So I connect using SSH and run the esxcli command and I get blank. I type "dcui" and I can see the screen just fine. So I'm going to restart the host to see if it sticks. In any case, I can see the original screen just fine now.
